Bulletin #43 Change the course to protect the planet
The wishes expressed by Pope Francis and the Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew, in the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, are far from being realized although nature never ceases to warn us about the need to change course to protect the planet. Hurricanes, droughts, fires, floods, pollution, depletion of resources, manipulation of ecosystems occur in the face of the individual, social and religious human indifference of the complex socio-environmental crisis in which we find ourselves. From the editorial we highlight the ecumenical work and environmental care as the thematic axes of the activities of this trimester.
From September 22nd to 25th, the International Seminar and the General Assembly of Justice and Peace of Europe were held in Taizé, a European ecumenical place. The Seminar provided the space for reflection on the spiritual roots and political fruits of Justice and Peace, emphasizing the continuity in the care of Creation. After fifty years of existence, Justice and Peace has a new reference in the Church in the newly created Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, chaired by Cardinal Turkson.
The last October 28th was held in Barcelona, in Claret bookstore, the third and last of the days of debate on the right to religious freedom provided in the project that the General Justice and Peace Commission developed on this issue this year. The previous days took place in Madrid, on February 3rd, and Seville, on May 18th. On this occasion, the participants were representatives of the four religious beliefs or traditions that are most deeply rooted in our society.
For the third year in a row, the Church for Decent Work Initiative has promoted the celebration of different events throughout Spain around October 7th, on the occasion of the World Day for Decent Work. To achieve sustainable economic development, societies must create the necessary conditions for people to access quality jobs, stimulating the economy without harming the environment.
The back cover summarizes the work of the different initiatives and activities in which we have participated together with other ecclesial and social organizations: the "Move against Obscene Inequality" campaign of the Alliance against Poverty; the encounter against the Trafficking of Human Beings, of the ecclesial group; the initiative “Link for Justice” with the eighth point of the green list and the incorporation of the Spanish Confederation of Secular Institutes into the network; and the International Conference "Perspectives for a world free of nuclear weapons and for integral development", which was held on November 10 and 11 in the Vatican, organized by the new Dicastery of which Justice and Peace is part.
